NEW ZEALAND FEDERATION OF SLED DOG SPORTS

CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD PROGRAM

EFFECTIVE APRIL 1999.

The awards programs are to be read in conjunction with the rules of the NZFSS.

PART I - ANNUAL MUSHER SYSTEM

A.                  PURPOSE

1.                   To provide a system which identifies the top musher in each class of racing each year.

B.                   GENERAL

1.                   This system awards points to each musher for each race completed.

2.                   Points are accumulated by class and there is no overall accumulation.

3.                   The points are awarded for the class entered  ie not necessarily the number of dogs run (with the limits set by the race rules).

4.                   Non-registered mushers do not receive points but are counted when calculating the points to be received by registered mushers.

5.                   Where the total points for two mushers are equal, the average number of points per contributing event will be used to determine their final placing.

C.                  POINTS CALCULATION

1.                   The formula is:

t  =  n + 1

where t = total points awarded

and n = number of mushers defeated in the relevant class.

PART II - CHAMPIONSHIP HARNESS DOG SYSTEM

A.                  PURPOSE

1.                   To recognise the ability of dogs in the sport of sled dog racing at a competitive level.

2.                   Such recognition to be structured so as to acknowledge participation as well as recognise exceptional ability/results.

B.                   GENERAL

1.                   This system awards points to each dog for each race completed

a.                   If a dog is “bagged” during a race it shall receive no points.

b.                   All dogs or teams subject to disqualification shall receive no points.

c.                    Junior class races do not qualify for points.

C.                  POINTS CALCULATION

1.                   First Team/Dog receives 10 points.

2.                   The ‘winning’ teams/dogs time is converted to seconds and multiplied by 1.25 to obtain the ‘cutoff time’.

3.                   All ‘other’ teams/dogs finishing within the ‘cutoff time’ receive points calculated as follows:

a.                   Subtract the ‘other’ time from the ‘cutoff time’

b.                   Subtract the ‘winning’ time from the ‘cutoff time’

c.                    Divide the total from “a” above by the total from “b” above

d.                   Multiply the result by 10 and round the resulting points to the nearest .5.

4.                   The minimum points allocated shall be 1.

5.                   NB  Remember that ALL time calculations must be done in total seconds, not hours, minutes and seconds.

                                  ie         ‘cutoff time’  -  ‘other’ time             )  x  10     &  rounded to nearest .5

‘cutoff time   -  ‘winning’ time         )

6.                   All ‘other’ teams finishing outside the ‘cutoff time’ will receive one point.

PART III - CHAMPIONSHIP WEIGHTPULL DOG SYSTEM

A.                  PURPOSE

1.                   To provide a system which is fair and equitable for all breeds, whereby dogs can accumulate points in weight pulling towards weight pull titles.  The system provides for three titles; WP, WPX, WPCh.

B.                   GENERAL

1.                   Any dog which fails to pull at least ten (10) times its body weight will receive no points.

2.                   A dog will receive points for its actual placing regardless of whether a dog pulling more weight fails to pull ten (10) times body weight.  For example, if the fourth placed dog failed to pull ten times body weight and the fifth placed dog pulled more than ten times body weight then the fifth place dog will only receive the points for fifth place.

3.                   Non-registered dogs do not receive points but are counted when calculating the points to be received by registered dogs.

C.                  POINTS CALCULATION

1.                   The formula is:

t  =  (w + 1) + (r + 1)

where t = Total points awarded

and w = number of dogs defeated for heaviest weight pulled

and r = number of dogs defeated for highest ratio pulled.
